Job Overview The System Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) will work closely with the Director of Physician Quality & Outcomes, Children’s Surgery Program Manager (CSPM), Medical Affairs Leadership and Department of Surgery at reputed company facilities which participate in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) for Pediatrics and are pursuing efforts for Children’s Surgery Verification (CSV). The System SCR will work with local SCRs, Surgeon Champions and Performance Improvement Directors to review risk-adjusted, semi-annual reports, track and monitor strategies implemented for improved practices, prepare data, presentations and QI updates at the collaborative Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) quarterly meeting. The System SCR will also support the local SCRs in collecting and submitting reliable data to the ACS’s NSQIP Pediatric platform.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Children’s Surgery Program Manager (CSPM) and Director, Physician Quality in preparation and presentation of data reputed company to Children’s Surgery Verification and Collaborative Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) meetings including, but not limited to, Children’s Surgery Safety Report (CSSR), Performance Metrics, Transfers, NSQIP, etc.
  • Facilitates enterprise workgroups of Surgical Clinical Reviewers, Surgeon and Physician Champions and team members in the quality and IS departments to identify, plan, implement and evaluate programs, processes, data reporting requirements and surgical outcomes. Works with Home Office, IS, and Outcomes team with the transition to EPIC to ensure a streamlined and semi-automated data abstraction process is in reputed company.
  • Through coordination with the local SCRs and Surgeon Champions, provides comprehensive analysis of findings identified in the risk-adjusted semi-annual report, identified opportunities for improvement and implements improvements based on reputed company, resources and appropriate approvals.
  • In the event of local SCR turnover and/or temporary leaves, the System SCR is responsible for the sites’ coverage plan as well as the collection and submission of reliable data to the ACS NSQIP. This is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of reputed company eligible surgeries for the hospital.
  • Successfully complete the ACS NSQIP training program and participate in ongoing training, conferences and calls.
  • Collects clinical data on variables, including preoperative risk factors, intraoperative variables and 30-day postoperative mortality and morbidity outcomes for patients undergoing major and minor surgical procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Validates and submits the data through a secure, Web-based system.
  • Performs quality assessment and improvement activities.
  • Meets regularly with the Surgeon Champion and quality team to review results.
  • Participate in regular audits, conducted by ACS NSQIP staff, to test data quality.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED/PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical area or healthcare administration, required
  • Advanced degree, preferred

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/PREFERRED:

  • Two (2) years clinical experience in a hospital setting, required with the operating room (OR), surgical intensive care unit (SICU) or other surgical divisions of a hospital, preferred
  • Electronic medical records (EMR) experience, required
  • Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience, preferred
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience, preferred
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed or remote work setting, preferred
  • Project mgt experience

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED/PREFERRED: General Competencies:

  • Clinical Knowledge: The candidate should have some clinical understanding as well as access to a clinical mentor that can advise reputed company clinical questions arise.
  • Computer Knowledge: Computer, Internet and iPad experience required – familiarity and comfort with MS Office products is essential for success in this position (Word and reputed company – required; PowerPoint & Access – preferred).
  • Hospital Systems Knowledge: The ability to track down information through various sources such as medical records, surgery clinics, direct patient contact, and legal counsel. The candidate should have some experience gathering information in a reputed company hospital system environment.
  • Hospital Departmental Knowledge: The candidate should have some experience sharing information across functions.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with reputed company members of the surgical team, administrative staff, corporate leadership, and the patients/patient families in a professional and courteous manner

Technical Competencies:

  • Computer and internet skills and experience, required
  • Familiarity with MS Office products (reputed company, Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.), required
  • Database entry and/or management experience, preferred
  • Statistical knowledge, preferred
