Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall of 2024, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department of Art History is located next to the Allen Memorial Art Museum ( ), which houses a small but rich collection of Islamic art; the Oberlin College Library also holds a collection of Islamic manuscripts. The Cleveland Museum of Art actively collects Islamic art. Responsibilities We welcome specialists in any subfield, region, or period whose teaching does justice to the geographic range and temporal depth of the Islamic world. The incumbent will teach 4.5 courses per year in the general area of the art and architecture of the Islamic world, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses. At the introductory level, the Department values methodological, temporal, and geographical breadth. Intermediate and advanced courses should offer reputed company a sense of the richness of issues and material appropriate for an undergraduate Islamic art history curriculum. Applicants will be expected to take advantage of the collections of the Allen Memorial Art Museum and the Oberlin College Libraries in their teaching, and to build interdisciplinary bridges to other programs and departments across reputed company such as Religion, Africana Studies, and Middle East and North Africa Studies. In addition to excellence in teaching, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on departmental and college-wide committees. Qualifications Among the qualifications required for appointment is the PhD degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2024-2025). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
