Junior DevOps Engineer / System Administrator

100% remote Flexible hours Hiring now

Protofire is looking for a Junior specialist to join our team in a role that leans heavily on internal system administration. We recently acquired our own physical servers, and we need a dedicated professional to handle its upkeep and management. Additionally, you will be responsible for reviewing and updating documentation for several projects to ensure its up-to-date state. This work can often be a bit repetitive and detail-heavy, but it’s essential to keep our internal environment running smoothly.

Beyond these core responsibilities, there will be opportunities to contribute to commercial projects and collaborate with our DevOps engineers as needed. If you’re willing to learn, we can help you develop the skills to become a full-fledged DevOps engineer. That path isn’t mandatory for this role, but for those who show initiative, we’ll gladly offer mentorship and guidance toward more advanced responsibilities in the future.

Requirements - What are we looking for?

  • Experience in Linux maintenance, monitoring, optimizations
  • Experience managing bare metal servers - knowing general best practices
  • Experience in sh, ash and BASH scripting
  • Good theoretical understanding of what container is, how Docker and Docker-compose works
  • Good theoretical understanding of how clouds are working
  • Strong communication skills, multitasking
  • Strong organizational skills - expertise in writing documentation, drawing diagrams, describing structures of complex environments
  • Required English level: B1+

Nice to have (otherwise can be learned while working with us)

  • Experience managing Proxmox bare metal servers
  • Cloud experience - with one of three listed clouds: AWS (preferably), GCP, Azure. Understanding of high availability, scalability, resilience, app performance, and security in the cloud
  • Any cloud certifications as a plus
  • Terraform or some other IaC
  • Developing automation modules, preferably with Ansible
  • Cross-clouds, hybrid cloud integrations
  • Blockchain, preferably understanding Blockchain Infrastructure
  • GoLang
  • Kubernetes
  • Telegraf
  • ELK stack
  • Prometheus
  • Grafana

What You’ll Do

  • Maintain and Monitor Hardware: Manage our in-house physical server, ensure uptime, apply updates, and troubleshoot hardware-related issues.
  • Oversee Internal Infrastructure: Keep essential services operational; maintain backups, security patches, and basic network configurations.
  • Document Internal Projects: Audit existing processes and update or create documentation where it’s missing or outdated.
  • Support Team Efforts: Pitch in on commercial or client-facing projects if/when the need arises, assisting senior DevOps engineers in tasks like containerization or monitoring setup.
  • Growth Opportunity: Learn modern DevOps practices (e.g., cloud best practices, container orchestration, advanced monitoring stacks) as part of your professional development—if you’re interested in eventually stepping into a more DevOps-oriented role.

Why Join Us

  • Stepping Stone for Growth: Great chance to learn new technologies and frameworks directly from experienced DevOps engineers.
  • Mentorship: We provide guidance, resources, and support for anyone looking to grow into a more advanced position.
  • Meaningful Work: Your tasks, though sometimes routine, keep our team’s internal projects and infrastructure on track.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work alongside a team that values knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement.
