University of the Cumberlands seeks an Academic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration Coordinator to advance the University’s strategic innovation initiatives through the intentional and responsible integration of artificial intelligence technologies across academic areas. The Academic AI Integration Coordinator reports to the Vice President for Strategic Innovation, Teaching, and Learning and works collaboratively with Instructional Design, the Learning Commons, academic leadership, and other institutional stakeholders. This position plays a central role in expanding the University’s capacity to design, implement, evaluate, and sustain AI-powered academic tools, systems, light-weight applications, and workflows that support teaching and learning.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Works with the Vice President for Strategic Innovation, Teaching, and Learning to implement strategic AI initiatives aligned with institutional priorities and academic innovation goals.

  • Design, code, build, and maintain AI-powered academic tools such as custom GPTs, structured prompt systems, knowledge repositories, workflow automation systems, light-weight applications, and AI-enhanced learning resources for faculty and students.

  • Collaborate with Instructional Design and the Learning Commons to develop AI-supported academic resources, including tutoring systems, simulations, case studies, and structured learning tools that enhance student success.

  • Prototype, test, refine, and operationalize AI-assisted workflows that improve efficiency in course development, faculty support, and academic operations.

  • Support implementation of AI tools within existing institutional academic systems.

  • Monitor updates and advancements in major AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, NotebookLM, and related technologies) and inform academic leadership of relevant developments and implications.

  • Research, evaluate, and document AI-related academic software platforms; assist in pilot initiatives and develop structured recommendations for leadership review.

  • Maintain organized documentation of AI tool builds, updates, workflows, and implementation standards to ensure sustainability and scalability.

  • Support the development of institutional guidance related to responsible academic AI use, including data privacy and security considerations, ethical implementation, academic integrity, and appropriate use standards.

  • Identify emerging opportunities where artificial intelligence can enhance teaching, learning, student support, and operational effectiveness.

  • Communicate technical AI concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and contribute to institutional conversations about academic innovation and digital fluency.

  • Remain current on research and best practices related to artificial intelligence in higher education and contribute insights to strategic planning efforts.

     

 

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in instructional design and technology, educational technology, computer science, information systems, artificial intelligence, educational leadership, or a related field from an accredited institution.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience building, configuring, or deploying AI-powered tools, automation workflows, light-weight applications, or system integrations (e.g., custom GPTs, prompt systems, workflow automation platforms, API-based tools, or similar solutions).

  • Practical experience working with generative AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) beyond basic prompting, including tool configuration, structured prompting systems, or workflow implementation.

  • Experience integrating emerging technologies into academic or enterprise systems such as learning management systems or institutional platforms.

  • Strong understanding of AI integration within learning management systems and academic programs.

  • Knowledge of responsible AI implementation practices, including data governance, ethical considerations, security, and academic integrity implications.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate emerging technologies and translate strategic vision into practical implementation.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and leadership levels.

  • Demonstrated experience with one or more of the major LMS, including Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, or Canvas. Preference is given to Blackboard experience.

  • Experience implementing distance-learning initiatives and/or integrating new technologies for better learning outcomes for students.

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting AI-related initiatives in higher education.

  • Experience using APIs or integrating AI tools into existing platforms.

  • Experience prototyping, piloting, and evaluating educational technology platforms.

  • Teaching experience in online or technology-enhanced environments preferred.
