This PAM Health coding externship will provide opportunities to coding students who are searching to gain experience in a coding role. This opportunity will provide knowledge on how to perform effectively in a coding role and the abstraction of both inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with ICD-10-CM and CPT coding rules, guidelines, and conventions following hospital and PAM Health system procedures. The ICD-10-CM codes will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness. * Externship Description:
- The PAM Health Coding Extern Program is a 90-day unpaid opportunity for coding students to work alongside other coders to gain hands-on experience with the medical coding process.
- After completion of 90-days, the extern may be eligible to become a full-time employee at PAM Health. This is at the discretion of the leadership team.
- Externship Requirements:
- Coding extern candidates are required to have successfully completed courses provided by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
- All externs are required to meet the expectations of the attendance and performance measures.
- If at any time the leadership staff feels like an extern is not meeting these expectations, the continuation of the externship is at the discretion of the leadership staff.
- PAM Health Benefits:
- Externs are not eligible for benefits provided by PAM Health.
- PAM Health benefits will become available to the individual if they are hired as a full-time employee.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- This position requires prolonged periods of sitting with a light amount of physical work. May produce visual fatigue. Visual acuity must be accurate to read and interpret reports, data, etc. See attached Job Activity Requirements.
- Customer Service:
- Must possess interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required for effective interaction with medical providers, case managers, and wound care managers.
- Must communicate frequently in a tactful and diplomatic manner with medical providers, case managers, and wound care managers including clear and concise querying.
- Must promote customer satisfaction by way of prompt and courteous service to internal and external customers.
- Promotes the Mission and Vision of PAM Health within the work environment and the community.
- Respects dignity and confidentiality by adherence to all applicable policies and procedures.
- Maintains the highest level of customer service via courtesy, compassion and positive communication.
- Health and Safety:
- Works in a manner that promotes safety; wears clothing appropriate to the performance of the job.
- Participates in OSHA required training.
- Follows universal precautions as appropriate for position; complies with Employee Health requirements for continued employment.
- Reports unsafe practices to management.
- Knows own role in case of an emergency.
- WORKING CONDITIONS: This individual spends almost 100% of his/her time in a well-lighted, well-ventilated and air-conditioned building.
- ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: This is a non-exempt position. It is supervised by the Corporate Coding Director. No formal line(s) of promotion exists.
