About The Role We are seeking passionate and skilled software engineers to join our new team in New York City. As a Backend Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing the core systems that power our primary products: AI Studio, Le Chat, and Mistral Code. Your work will directly influence how users and developers interact with our AI platform at scale, focusing on building reliable, high-performance backend systems and APIs capable of serving millions of users. This role offers an excellent opportunity for engineers ranging from mid-level to senior and staff levels who are eager to learn, collaborate, and deliver impactful products. You will be involved in designing scalable architectures, developing backend features, and collaborating cross-functionally to ensure a seamless platform experience. Your contributions will help us advance our mission to democratize AI and make it accessible, efficient, and innovative.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
• Proficiency in Python or another backend language such as Golang, Kotlin, or C#
• Strong understanding of backend fundamentals including APIs, databases, caching, messaging systems, and distributed architectures
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ownership mindset with the ability to ship end-to-end features with minimal supervision
• Effective communication skills and a collaborative attitude
• Team-oriented, low-ego approach, and curiosity for continuous learning
• Experience with full-stack development, API ecosystems, and deploying software across diverse environments (cloud, on-premises)
• Knowledge of infrastructure management tools such as Docker, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, Helm, and Terraform
• Optional but preferred: AI/ML engineering experience, observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog), UX and product-centric mindset

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable backend features and APIs using modern frameworks
• Ensure optimal performance and reliability across distributed systems
• Contribute to systems supporting inference, billing, AI tooling, observability, and developer experience
• Design and implement efficient, secure, and scalable architectures to support product growth
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams on deployment, monitoring, and performance tuning
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, participating in code reviews and setting technical standards
• Work closely with product managers, platform engineers, and AI/ML teams to develop scalable model-as-a-service solutions
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent platform-wide user experience
• Address complex engineering challenges, including distributed systems and AI product integration
• Stay current with emerging technologies and incorporate relevant innovations into our platform
