Story Editor, Chalkbeat and Votebeat

This a Full Remote job, the offer is available from: United States Civic News Company, parent company of the nonprofit newsrooms Chalkbeat, focused on telling the story of education in America; Votebeat, dedicated to in-depth reporting on elections and voting; and Healthbeat, covering public health and health policy both nationally and locally, is seeking a Story Editor for Chalkbeat and Votebeat to edit both Chalkbeat and Votebeat stories. This position reports to the Managing Editor for Standards and Workflow. The key responsibilities for this role include:

• Line editing stories from Civic News Company’s Votebeat and Chalkbeat.
• Making sure stories incorporate regional or national context and are balanced, compelling, properly sourced.
• Ensuring that stories are precise and clear, read smoothly, and adhere to AP and Civic News style.
• Attending daily and weekly planning meetings.
• Providing editorial support to bureau chiefs and managing editors.
• Inputting and proofing stories in our CMS and occasionally helping with homepage curation and photo uploading.
• Providing one-on-one coaching and mentoring for reporters reputed company needed.

• 5+ years experience in daily journalism.
• Expertise in story structure, line editing, and copy editing.
• Experience working in a CMS.
• Stellar news judgment.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a knack for working with early career and reputed company reporters and collaborating with other editors.
• A demonstrable interest in U.S. public education and voting rights.

Bonus points if you’ve got:

• Deep knowledge of U.S. public education and voting rights.
• Journalism experience in reputed company, Denver, Indianapolis, Michigan, Memphis, Chicago, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, or Texas.

This full-time, remote-eligible position may be based reputed company in the reputed company United States with a preference for those located in the Mountain or Pacific time zones. The schedule is 2-10 p.m. EST Monday-Friday, with some flexibility earlier or reputed company depending on the news cycle. The salary range is $95,000-$100,000; final salary will be determined based on level of experience and geographic location, with a generous benefits package, including:
