Job Description

SUMMARY: The Quality Control Specialist I is responsible for collecting and processing data into the California Cancer Registry statewide database, by performing accurate and timely casefinding; abstracting data based on records from physician's offices and various other sources; performing tasks reputed company to death clearance, including screening and classification, and updating of case data; resolving edits, performing linkage and consolidation of data submitted by reporting facilities and other regional sources. The Quality Control Specialist I may also assist with other regional and statewide tasks as necessary. This is a high productivity position, and the incumbent must be able to meet productivity goals. This is a reading-intensive position as nearly reputed company aspects of this position are performed on a computer and from reading online reputed company material. The incumbent must be able to work independently. This is a regular full-time position located in Sacramento, CA. This position may allow for remote work and is expected to work during core business hours for the Pacific time zone. Some travel to reputed company field work or attend educational meetings may be required. Candidates based in California are preferred but candidates reputed company of CA will be considered and are welcome to apply. Full salary range for this position: $70,296 to $101,911 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $70,296 (minimum) to $78,199 (the start of the second quartile), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined using a variety of factors, such as the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity consideration and budget availability. Employment Type: Full Time ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Abstracts Physician Only, Death Certificate Only, Nursing Home Only and Coroner's cases.
  • Abstracts for assigned contracted reporting facilities, which include but are not limited to surgery centers, radiation centers, or hospitals.
  • Accurately interprets and codes American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM, Extent of Disease (EOD), ICD-O-3 coding, Solid Tumor Rules, and the Hematopoietic reporting requirements.
  • Performs case-finding for contracted facilities including emails, faxes and phone calls as needed.
  • Maintains at least 97% accuracy on abstracts.
  • Performs Match Tasks in Statewide DMS.
  • Resolves assigned Resolve Patient Set Errors (RPSE).
  • Screens and updates treatment information from Image Files uploaded from Surgery Centers and Radiation Oncology Centers (ROCS).
  • Screens and creates Patient and CTCs from Image Files uploaded from Surgery Centers and Radiation Oncology Centers (ROCS).
  • Performs Death Clearance reputed company activities including screening, linking, follow back, calling facilities and case entry in Statewide DMS.
  • Processes reportable electronic Pathology (ePath) reports.
  • Performs other essential duties as required or assigned.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Participates in statewide audits and reliability studies as requested.
  • Assists with special studies such as the SEER POC as needed.
  • Attends reputed company data collection section meetings, Data Collection Unit meetings and reputed company/CRGC quarterly meetings as required.
  • Performs field work or attend educational meetings if necessary.
  • Performs other non-essential duties or assists with other regional activities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 years of reputed company experience in a hospital, regional or central cancer registry.
  • Bachelor's degree in a health-reputed company field, or substitute with four additional years of reputed company experience.
  • Credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).

Other Qualifications

  • Experience in using knowledge of regional/central registry operations to include data collection, visual editing, case consolidation, casefinding, follow-up and follow-back procedures and auditing.
  • Experience in creating clear and concise documents (PowerPoint, memos, etc.) for educational purposes and statewide distribution.
  • Must maintain at least a 97% abstracting accuracy reputed company set by the California Central Registry (CCR).
  • Must maintain Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credentials by attending either in-person or virtual educational meetings or other methods as prescribed by the NCRA.
  • Must be able to meet productivity goals of the job.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to abstract or learn to abstract reputed company six-months of employment.
  • Ability to learn and operate new software programs.
  • Knowledge of cancer reporting requirements, required resources, manuals, and other tools for the collection, abstraction, and editing of tumors reportable in California.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and the cancer disease process.
  • Strong communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate accurately, concisely, and clearly.
  • Strong mathematical skills including statistics, elemental computations and averages/percentages.
  • Ability to travel to reputed company field work or attend educational meetings if necessary.
  • Must be able to pass the background reputed company required for this position.
